Immaculate Conception UGCC Hamtramck, MI

Once the seat of the significant Ukrainian Catholic community of the Detroit area, even had a parochial high school. Not sure how the current situation is there now.

The high school and elementary school relocated to Warren I think in the 70's or 80's. The high school has since closed within the past 2 years or so.

Wonder if St. John's UGCC on Clippert is still open, was a beautiful church, great architecturally, but for some reason the altar faced west. It was right near SS Peter and Paul. I will have to get pics. I never did make it inside of St. John's.

Hetman,

Welcome to the forum, and thanks for the beautiful photos. Yes, St John's UGCC is still open. It doesn't have a website, as far as I know, but there is an article here [aodonline.org] that has a couple photos.

Many years,

Neil

St. John's is still open and celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2007. Their elementary school closed in the mid 1980's. Sts. Peter and Paul is around the corner and there is a large RC church next door that was a prominent Polish parish. Much of the neighborhood is Hispanic now.

St. John's is a gem of the church with wonderful frescoes above the altar area.
